solar thermal energySolar thermal energy has many powerful applications in the world. In fact, there is a solar thermal energy plant south of Las Vegas that generates 64 megawatts. It's called Nevada Solar One. It is located on Highway 95 just south of Boulder City. It covers 300 acres and has 760 mirror arrays that are 100 meters across. We got to see them in action on a trip home from Las Vegas last weekend. It is a powerful thing to see. In fact, it was so inspiring to see such a large array using all that free sunshine to generate an impressive amount of electricity.

The other solar thermal energy project I am familiar with is in India. It cooks food for 30,000 people a day. There are numerous parabolic cookers that heat liquid in pipes that goes through ovens and cookers to heat food. Imagine if we could do that here on a large scale. Think of how many schools, universities, hospitals, restaurants, and food processors could use simple sunshine to cut down on power consumption. The image in the corner are the parabolic cookers that heat the pipes filled with oil or water.

Solar thermal energy has so much potential and considering the cost of heating and generating electricity, should be on the forefront of many engineer's consciousness as they go forward with new energy planning, as the Nevada Solar One project demonstrates (see picture below).
