Back when I was ten years old and had no idea what Global Warming was or that there were actual solar panels out there which created energy from UV Rays, I saw a 1996 Hollywood flick starring Halle Barry called Race the Sun (movie trailer below). This movie opened my eyes to what is possible with solar panels. This movie takes the basic plot line of a rag tag classroom of kids who the school system has forgotten about. They have no ambition, motivation or will to make something more of their Hawaiian lives until a teacher (Halle Berry) convinces them otherwise. They enter into an Australian competition to build a solar powered car to be raced 2000 miles for world respect. Like usual everyone counts them out but they prove the majority wrong and prove something to themselves.
We have all seen this mid 90’s story line played out a million times but it is always entertaining especially for a little ten year old who wanted solar panels for his mom’s mini van after Race the Sun’s credits started to roll. There should be more movies like this, which promote going green to the world’s youth.
