One of the biggest motivations I have for going green is saving the green. We have a hot summer coming up and our air conditioner is the single-most energy consuming appliances we have in the house. Normally our electric bills run about $50 a month in the winter, but jump to over $250 in the summer when the air conditioner goes on. I heard on the news that we could get a new air conditioner, take advantage of energy tax rebates, and save ourselves a ton of money every summer. We need to cool our house for about six months of the year, so if we could cut the cost in half, going green makes a lot of sense. My folks bought a new energy efficient air conditioner a few years ago and they saved incredible amounts of energy, even though they keep their house cooler than they did with their old one. It's my impression that most people think about going green more for the cost savings than the altruistic aspects of protecting the environment, although I think that this attitude is shifting more toward the environmental concerns more than ever before.
