For the last couple of years my husband and I have been talking about installing some solar panels on our farm. We were having a hard time with the costs for electricity and heat as we were expanding our barns and livestock. I did not realize the amount of electricity that it would take to run some chicken incubators and milking machines. In talking with other farmers around the area, we decided we should finally set up some solar panels.
We were going to start out slowly at first and then, if we liked the solar panels, continue buying more until he were totally onto a solar panels system. The only hard part of the entire process was the actual purchase of the solar panels. A couple of the different hardware stores we looked at wanted a lot of money for a simple installation. I thought we could do much better if we took some time to look around online. My husband, being the most impatient person on the planet, wanted to just buy the solar panels from the local store and get them installed quickly. I wanted to save money. In the end, I won.
We went home and I set the laptop on the table. We both sat down and started looking at information about solar panels, installing them, and where to buy them. Some of the websites were very informative, but wanted more for the solar panels than the hardware store wanted. Just as my husband started to get that little "I knew it" smirk on his face, I found American National Solar. This website, which can be found by visiting their online store www.americannationalsolar.com, was a goldmine for alternative energy sources and solar panels. We looked around and found 4' x 8' Solar Panels (32 sq. ft.)for the pool that would be great for us to start with.
Now that the solar panels are installed we are ready to install some more for the house. In the last year, we've saved over $1,000 in electric bills. I can't believe that we actually saved that much! The extra savings is going towards a new system that will hopefully save us even more money each year! We have even thought about a combination of solar panels and wind turbine for generating all the electricity we need. That way we could go completely off grid and really save some money. Maybe someday that will happen, but for now I am just happy about the savings we've had so far!
