Don’t get me wrong energy tax rebates are a shining example of our government working to create a cleaner tomorrow but there are a few things to know about them, I picked up after talking to the tax man. So in 2009, my family installed a Energy Star rated heat pump unit. Basically, these work as both the heater and AC with a fan unit up in the attic and a condenser outside. It came with all the new tech including the latest refrigerant who’s ousted R-22. A system like this costs a bit more then lower grade stuff but much of that money is made up through energy tax rebates. The word rebate should be changed to incentive or credit.
Say a person has 4000 dollars in energy credit. If their taxes for the year only create a 3000 dollar liability then 3000 of the energy tax credit will be applied that year and the rest will go on next year’s return. A person will get their full environment credit but it may not all happen in a single tax year. Something to remember.
