Bar none, there is not a corner of the United States that sees more sun annually then the Southwest. The desert landscape, lack of tall vegetation and many rooftops is the perfect formula for capturing solar thermal energy. I lived in Arizona, traveled around the Southwest and have an intimate understanding of the desert being an outdoorsman. Speaking for Arizona, this is a place who understands the benefits of solar panels. I used to live across the street from a power station teaming with fields of commercial sized solar panels. An old neighbor had what looked to be years old solar PV cells sitting on his roof facing the west.
This time of the year more then enough sun is shining over this part of the country. I have even heard rumblings from people who live there that temperatures are already reaching 90 degrees. There is no reason why the Southwest can’t be the shining example of how far a place can take solar thermal energy. Such a movement, state funded, would create jobs and a lasting impact.
